This piece depicts the Buddha seated upon a lotus throne, bathed in a soft halo rendered in the faintest wash of ink. The robes and quiet presence of the figure are expressed entirely through subtle gradations of sumi ink, while a soft ring of light glows behind the Buddha's head. At the center, the words "Tenjō Tenge Yuiga Dokuson" are inscribed in bold gold ink, and below, a passage from the Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyo) is added in fine brushwork. The work is created using traditional Japanese shoji paper combined with non-woven fabric, taking advantage of the paper's natural translucency and ink-bleed to bring out the depth and beauty of negative space unique to the hanging scroll format.
